John Uri Lloyd was a pioneer in pharmacy, colloidal chemistry, pharmacognosy, and the American materia medica, as well as a novelist and local historian. His most important contributions were in the fields of botanical medicines, and standardization of drug manufacturing. He led the way in developing ethical drugs, and quality in the drug industry. Emma Rouse Lloyd, from a prominent northern Kentucky family, was a writer, illustrator, and wife of John Uri Lloyd. She wrote "Clasping Hands With Generations Past," illustrated "Stringtown On The Pike" and "Warwick Of The Knobs" with her husband John, the author of the works.
